Portfolio assessment

This is a means of identification whereby a students submits a collection of work they have selected to a teacher. It is more common in other domains, but I believe could be successfully used in mathematics.

Advantages

  • No time constraints.
  • Can reflect particular/special interests of the student.
  • May be integrated over a variety of curriculum areas.
  • Can show progression over time, which may be especially beneficial for Mäori students who have smaller numbers of students in preschool education (Bevan-Brown, 2009).

Disadvantages

  • May pose questions about who completed the work.
  • Students may be reluctant to prepare.
  • May not show anything more than regular classroom work.
